Most outsiders have very biased idea of Russia's realities. Media depict Russian poverty and Russia's reputation as a Mafia-driven, highly dangerous place to be in. Sometimes, it seems as if the whole world is angry with Russia trying to highlight the worst aspects of this beautiful country.
Modern Russia is different. Its economy is striving as oil and gas exports plummeted in past 5 years. New jobs are being created for millions of people and the standard of living is higher in Russia than in any other country of the Former Soviet Union Republics.
Obviously, this is not true for all areas of Russia. The problem with Russia is that it's a huge territory. There are areas where economic development is still very low, higher levels of unemployment and higher crime rates. However, if you visit one of Russia's major cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, you will see that it very much like any other big city in US or Europe - high traffic, lots of flashy ads and street banners, busy business people and plenty of restaurants and recreation facilities such as cinemas, theatres, museums, night clubs...
