There are many email harvesting bots and spammers that acquire email addresses all over the net. There are also some scrupulous websites that take your email addresses when you provide your email address to them (such as signing up for mailing list) and sell them to spammers or other companies.
I learned that having different email accounts for different purposes helps to protect my main email account. For example, besides from my main email account, which I use for family, friends, net purchases and other important emails, I also have another account for my websites, newsletters, registrations and other not too much important emails.
I advise you to have a separate email account to be used when you register to sites and for initial enal/eal corresondence. Just be sure to always check that account! This way you could avoid or lessen the unwanted emails that might arrive in your main email account. This is also a good way to organize your emails.
I recommend Yahoo Mail. They provide unlimited email space and a you@yahoo.com adress. They also have a spam filtering system and other added features.
Here are some other free web-based email services:
· Gmail.com - gives you almost 3 GB of storage! Very cool features such as tags, powerful email search, instant messenger/chat within email, etc. It has unintrusive text ads. · FastMail.fm - gives 10 MB storage space for free account with choice of over 50 domains. · MyWay.com - you'll get free 125 MB storage.
You also might want to take a look at a freeware email retrieval and notification program called ePrompter.
"ePrompter automatically and simultaneously checks and retrieves your email messages from up to sixteen password protected email accounts such as AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, Earthlink, Email.com, iName, Juno, Lycos, Mail.com, Mindspring, MSN, Netscape, POP3, OneBox, Rediffmail, SBC Yahoo, Switchboard, USA.net, Gmail and hundreds of other email domains."
This is helpful so you don't have to individually check your email accounts anymore. It retrieves emails from all your email accounts and you can directly reply using the program itself. It's very convenient if you maintain a couple of email accounts.
