Hi, this is Jim Garrison of Maine, USA, age 51. I was asked to write this article for my opinion on why Ukrainian women hold such fascination for American men. First of all, I did not set out to find a Ukrainian woman. My situation was such that after 2 failed marriages, I was ready to try something different. I posted my profile including photo on a website accessible internationally, not really expecting anything to happen...but something did. I started getting letters from an attractive young lady in her 20's who lived in a town near Vladivostok who claimed to be interested in me. It did not take long to discover that she was "scamming" me, following a pattern all too familiar to lonely foreign men: she lived with a mother who was destitute and had health problems. She did not respond directly to specifics of my letters to her and professed love for me after only a few letters. I knew that soon she would be asking me for money, so I stopped writing her.
But this started getting me interested in learning more about women of former Soviet Union, particularly those of Ukraine. As you are no doubt aware, there are many websites with profiles of these beautiful ladies supposedly interested in pursuing relationship with foreign gentlemen. Could any of these lovely women be interested in me, a middle-aged guy with ordinary looks? As I acquainted myself with the particulars of the Ukrainian culture including family life, history and economy, I discovered that the perceived age difference between men and Ukrainian women are not as sharp as in America and through personal experience with corresponding and visiting a few ladies I think I learned a lot. You see, I was fortunate to have been helped along the way by some people who worked in agencies sponsoring these ladies' profiles and although I sustained a few setbacks, I believe I may have found someone suitable with whom I would like to spend the rest of my life. One of the key reasons I was interested in a younger woman was because I still interested in starting a family at my age and I learned that our age difference (18 years) was not insurmountable to the lady I am with now. I used to be concerned about what others would think when they saw us together, but eventually realized that all that matters is what each of us thinks about the other.
I have found also that the Ukrainian women I have met are similar to those elsewhere, in the fact that they all have their own set of motivations, desires and values. I have also seen that there are many honest, hard-working people in Ukraine. It has become fairly obvious however, that the concept of work to women there was always secondary for the love of their families. It is this love, which I have hopes of cultivating at my own home hearth here in America.
Have you ever watched a movie in which a man and woman of different cultures meet and fall in love in an exotic land and placed yourself in the part of the leading man? I had that dream once. Now I hope to live it.
